WARREN DUNES [Sawyer, Mi] VOTED
BEST STATE / NATIONAL PARK
July 2005 "...Those who prefer to stay out of the sun and sand
have plenty to choose from at Warren Dunes as well. The park features
10 miles of hiking trails, a 236-site campground, a playground,
walking tours, wildlife, and winter sports like cross-country skiing
and snowshoeing. Plus, the park is located within six miles of two
other state parks-Warren Woods and Grand Mere. Warren Dunes is our
winner, though, and well worth a day trip, if not a full week's
vacation.."

MIDWEST LIVING
"In
communities such as Union Pier, Grand Beach and Lakeside, visitors
rub elbows with longtime residents while browsing art galleries,
antiques malls and boutiques. Restaurants range from friendly open-air
cafes to reliable old roadhouses. Surrounding orchards burst with
fruit ripe for picking, and local wineries host tasting and tours"
ST. LOUIS SEEN MAGAZINE
"If you want to avoid Florida's crowds and still experience
the sights and sounds of an ocean-like body of water, Harbor Country
in Southwest Michigan is a perfect northern getaway, both in and
out of season. Harbor Country has been variously described
as 'the Hamptons of the Midwest' and 'the Riviera of Lake Michigan,'
yet the area has maintained its rustic origins, recalling the more
prosperous era of the 1920's and 1930's.
You won't find fast-food havens along the Red Arrow Highway (rambling
from Union Pier to Sawyer between Lake Michigan and the Interstate)
- just cafes, barbeque stands, roadhouses, cozy antique-filled hideaways,
beaches, woods, and a new generation of B&Bs where breakfast
is served late because most guests prefer to sleep in..."

"The search for the ideal travel retreat - a place close enough
to make a weekend trip enjoyable and realistic, but far enough away
to offer a refreshingly different change of scene- recently yielded
a pleasant and affordable surprise. We left Indianapolis Labor
Day weekend for the scenic setting of Michigan's Harbor Country."

"Ninety minutes from Chicago, three hours from Indianapolis,
and four hours from Detroit, Harbor Country offers a pastoral autumn
escape with panache. The laid-back life awaits: Leaf-peep, pick
apples, prowl shops, dine on everything from burgers to artichoke
and porcine risotto. Just don't ask where the nightlife is-- it's
the sunset, stupid."
SPECIALTY COFFEE READER
"What better business to open in a resort area than a coffeehouse?"
But when that "resort" is a sleepy, virtually unknown
Midwest haven, coffee alone probably won't make the grade. So, along
a scant two-mile stretch of Harbor Country on Michigan's southwestern
shore, four entrepreneurs in Union Pier and Lakeside, Mich., have
creatively expanded the offerings of traditional coffee purveyors."

"Spring comes early and lingers like an old friend in Southwest
Michigan's Harbor Country. Along the southernmost stretch of the
state's Lake Michigan shore, soft, cool breezes stir sleepy port
towns that rise amid the dunes. Inland, orchards parade across
the rolling countryside, blooming in pastel waves of pale pink,
snowy white and even ice blue. The mild climate and cream-colored
beaches have lured visitors for generations. Now, one-time
inns and grand summer homes pamper guests as bed and breakfasts."

Chicago - not exactly the middle of nowhere - it makes for a surprisingly

breakfasts in the area."

New Buffalo's tourists are welcomed rather than begrudged. The marinas,

ease."

Tribune staff reporter--
"My first encounter with Union Pier some five years ago did not
happen by choice. I was driving home from a church retreat on Interstate
Highway 94 with a carload of friends (including my fiancee Amy, now
my wife) when my alternator blew out. I coasted onto the first exit
ramp I saw, steering my hobbled car until it ran out of steam...straight
into the driveway of the Union Pier Antique Mall. A few
months later, in quest of a beach vacation spot, Amy and I returned
to Union Pier. We've been coming back ever since, mostly because
the area offers a wealth of low-key diversions bound to suit our
fickle moods...
It's not just Union Pier, but surrounding communities such as New
Buffalo, Lakeside, Harbert and Sawyer -- collectively known as Harbor
Country -- that offer weekend vacationers options from winery tours
to antique malls."
