Join the excitement of one of the Midwest’s most eclectic interactive celebrations of “All that is Art” during the fifteenth Annual Art Attack, May 1,2, and 3rd. Escape to our Southwestern Michigan lakeside resort for a weekend showcase full of gallery receptions, artist’s workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, theatre, music, food and an overall great time! We offer a rich palette of artistic activity for your creative pleasure.

Harbor Country is a haven for artists and galleries in addition to our wonderful shops, restaurants and lodging facilities. There is art in everything that we do. Harbor Country businesses turn themselves into an art form for the weekend. You will be delighted with the creative and innovative events planed.

Events will be held in many of the eight communities that comprise Harbor Country. They are located off the first four exits of I-94 from the Michigan-Indiana border. From the west and north take I-94 to exits 1, 4, 6, or 12; from the east take U. S. 12 to the Red Arrow Highway, then right to Union Pier and beyond or left to New Buffalo. Direct from the New York Festival of International Commercials, we will present “Ad Fest and Feast,” an evening of viewing the world’s most award-winning and funniest television commercials of 2008. We invite you to join us for an evening of fun, food, and laughter! The memorable event will take place at the beautiful Marina Grand Resort located on the harbor in New Buffalo. Local Color Gallery has an extensive collection of South Shore travel posters. We are especially proud of the Blossomtime in Michigan poster. It was originally printed in 1927, and is now distributed by Local Color Gallery. At one time the South Shore connected with the Shore Line Motor Coaches to take passengers from the trains to other destinations in the tri-state area. Some of these destinations were in Michigan. Blossomtime in Michigan is a rare example of these travel posters. 50% of the proceeds from the sale of this poster will go to the Restoration and Renovation of Saint Mary of the Lake Church.

Calling all children! artTent is a drop-off center for children K-5 chock full of concurrent arts activities sponsored by the New Buffalo Fine Arts Council. Children younger than 5 years old are welcome with an adult. Parents can enjoy Art Attack confident that your children are in a safe, supervised learning environment. Children can participate for any amount of time and enjoy face painters, storytelling, and opportunities to participate in Kindermusik, tempera painting, papermaking and more. Pre-registration is recommended. There is no fee for this activity however, donations to the New Buffalo Fine Arts Council will be accepted.

LaPorte artist Sandy Fairman grows the beautiful herbs and flowers she presses and uses in her amazing pieces, which she sells through her company, Natures Gifts. She will give demonstrations at 1 and 2 p.m. on how to press flowers and ideas for use. At 3 p.m. she will hold a workshop for children. They will learn how to press flowers and then create a bookmark using flowers. (Children should be accompanied by an adult.)

Todd Keller’s aspiration as a photographer is to simply arouse an emotion. His photography consists primarily of stark images. His love for Chicago, with its architecture, sculptures and many fascinating cemeteries, shines through in all of his work. Historic cemeteries have always been interesting subjects. His series on local landscape photos, representing this side of Lake Michigan are organic and yet fit in with his work, both in content, drama, and emotion.

Photo hand-coloring made simple. Photographer Julie Schwarz will show you a less complicated way to hand-color your inkjet photo’s with Marshall color pencils and give some hints on compositions that work best. She will also be on hand to answer questions regarding her hand-manipulated polaroids and to sign her book “Harbor Country...`One Step’ at a Time: A Polaroid Oddyssey Through my Hometown.” Ronald Stec will be painting his simple but well calculated compositions, using bold color, poignant light and shadow contrast. Works depicting aspects of rural America and Great Lakes landscape prevail in his repertoire. He is eager to share some of his most recent paintings created after a trip to Germany.

You might know Edwin Shelton and his wife Laurel Izard as the co-creators of an eclectic line of ceramic pieces under the name Izwin. Edwin is not only an educator and mentor in the “hands on” artistic arena; he is also a spiritual guide. This latest collection of spirit-driven paintings are designed to provoke thought and discussion. You may find these lively pieces a portal or “tube of light”, for your spirituality. Do come and meet the artist. You may find yourself wanting to know more about yourself and the Spiritualist Circle of Light. Tom Sourlis has been working in stained glass for over 40 years. His infatuation with the medium has taken him to Oregon to work directly with a glass manufacturer to make his own one of a kind glass. His lamps are richly veined with undulating metal seams that give it very organic feeling. They truly light up any space like no other lamp can. In 1974, he began making stained glass windows and lampshades which led to a 30 year fascination with glass lamps beginning with Tiffany style and moving into more contemporary, sculptural forms; all of his work being driven by his connection to nature. Joining Tom will be Twyla Butler who has worked in glass for nearly 15 years. Twyla is experienced in the arts of copper foil, lead came, and fusing glass as well as in metalsmithing and lapidary work. Her work includes jewelry, stained glass, and one of-a-kind mosaics.

Listen to the ancient sounds of strings and melodies of the Lincoln era. Back again this year by popular demand, Homemade Jam will set a background of music with hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo and bass; taking you to a place where, maybe you ’ve never been before. Kathy Leek from Union Mills, along with Dan Moser and Jack Collings, have played at state parks and local festivals throughout the area for the last two decades and they are happy to return to southwest Michigan’s Art Attack.
